Mastering Tenses (The Backbone)

🌟 The Golden Rule of Tenses

Tenses tell us WHEN an action happens (Time) and HOW MUCH of it is done (State).

1. Present Tense

Tense Structure Usage & Signal Words Example
Simple Present S + V1 (s/es) + O Habits, Universal Truths.
Keywords: Always, often, daily.
He plays football daily.
The sun rises in the east.
Present Continuous S + is/am/are + V1-ing 1. Happening NOW.
2. Fixed Future Plan: I am going to Delhi tomorrow. (99% sure).
I am writing a letter now.
Present Perfect S + has/have + V3 Just finished actions.
Keywords: Just, already, yet.
She has completed her work.
Present Perfect Cont. S + has/have + been + V1-ing Started in past, continuing now.
Keywords: Since, For.
It has been raining since morning.

⚠️ Common Error: Since vs For

2. Past Tense

Tense Structure Usage & Signal Words Example
Simple Past S + V2 + O Action completed in past.
Keywords: Yesterday, last week, ago.
He went there yesterday.
Past Continuous S + was/were + V1-ing Action continuing in past.
Keywords: While, when.
I was sleeping when he called.
Past Perfect S + had + V3 Action happened before another past action.
Tip: The "earlier" past.
The train had left before we reached.
Past Perfect Cont. S + had + been + V1-ing Action started in past, continued, and finished in past.
Keywords: Since, For.
He had been waiting for 2 hours when she arrived.

3. Future Tense

Note: Modern grammar often treats "Future" under Modals (Will/Shall), but for exams, follow the structure.

Tense Structure Usage Example
Simple Future S + will/shall + V1 Plans, predictions. I will go to Delhi tomorrow.
Future Continuous S + will be + V1-ing Action in progress in future. She will be cooking at 8 PM.
Future Perfect S + will have + V3 Action completed by a time in future. I will have finished by Sunday.
Future Perfect Cont. S + will have been + V1-ing Action continuing up to a future point.
(Rare in exams but good to know)
By 2025, I will have been working here for 5 years.

🧠 Exam Hack: Gap Filling Strategy

  1. Look for Signal Words: if you see "yesterday", use V2. If you see "since/for", think Perfect Continuous.
  2. Context Check: Is the whole paragraph in the past? Then maintain Past Tense. Don't switch to Present suddenly.
