Was it fair? By modern standards, it was not fair to all sections of society. It operated on the principle of "an eye for an eye," but the punishments varied drastically depending on social class. For example, if a noble injured another noble, the punishment was severe. But if a noble injured a commoner or a slave, they usually only had to pay a minor fine. It heavily favored the wealthy and ruling classes over the lower classes.

Q10. If you had to choose one major innovation from early civilisations that changed the world permanently, what would it be and why?

The most transformative innovation was the invention of writing (such as cuneiform in Mesopotamia).

Why: Before writing, human knowledge relied entirely on oral traditions, which were prone to being forgotten or altered. It enabled communication across vast distances and across generations, acting as the foundation upon which all modern human progress and education is built.

Differences:

  • Status of Women: In Egypt, women generally enjoyed more rights than their counterparts in Mesopotamia or China. Egyptian women could own property, run businesses, and even rule as Queens (like Cleopatra), whereas societies in China and Mesopotamia were more strictly patriarchal.
  • Ruler's Divine Status: In Egypt, the Pharaoh was worshipped directly as a living god. In China, the Zhou rulers were seen as "appointees of heaven" but could be overthrown if they failed the people. In Mesopotamia, kings were often seen as intermediaries between the gods and the people rather than gods themselves.
